(Unconditional) Love Practice 2024

매체와 장르에 제한을 두지 않고 광범위한 영역에서 창작 활동을 영위하고 있는 작가 신단비의 첫 개인전 ‘(Unconditional) Love Practice’ 가 성수동에 위치한 씨디에이 제로(CDA ZERO)에서 개최한다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 6점의 신작과 2점의 구작을 선보이는데, 설치 미술을 필두로 입체, 영상, 드로잉, 사진 등 다양한 매체의 작품이 여기에 포함된다. 특히, 지난 10여 년간의 시간을 수집한 자전적 성격의 (전시 제목과 동명의) 아트북이 하나의 대표적인 출품작으로 그 자리를 굳건히 하다는 점이 이번 전시의 특징 중 하나다. 작가는 주로 자신과 주변 환경에서 얻을 수 있는 경험과 감각을 작업의 재료로 사용한다. 이번 전시에서는 과거와 현재를 아울러 그녀와 가장 가까운 대상, 이를테면 가족이나 연인 혹은 자기 자신을 관찰하고 사랑한다는 것에서부터 얻을 수 있는 가치를 이야기하려 한다.

 

전시는 관객을 작가의 과거로 회귀시키며 시작된다. 지극히 전통적이지만 여전히 현대적인 스테인리스 우편함이 순환을 의미하는 원형의 구조를 한 채 공중에 매달려있다. 설치 미술 작품 ‘문밖에서 듣는 소리’는 출처를 특정하기 어려운 여러 익숙한 소음들로 작품의 관람 태도와 동선을 형성한다. 허리를 숙여 귀를 대고 소리를 따라가는 것으로 관객은 작가의 어린 시절 경험과 동기화된다. 공감할 수 있는 대중적 경험 혹은 주제이기에 감상이 어렵지 않다. 작품과 내용의 관계가 명확하고 직관적인 부분도 전달력을 높이는 역할을 톡톡히 해낸다. 무엇보다 감상에 방해가 될 수 있는 부가적인 요소를 최대한 덜어내고, 오직 핵심 대상으로만 작품을 구성하고 연출하려는 작가적 노력과 태도가 작품의 심미성을 높이는 기반이 되어 주었다. 이번 전시의 주요 작품인 ‘문밖에서 듣는 소리’의 특징이 곧 그녀의 작업 전반을 관통하는 미학에 수렴한다. 

 

‘Candid shot’이나 ‘(Unconditional) Love Practice’와 같이 과거와 현재를 아우르는 기록적 성격의 작업에서는 작가의 한결같은 취향을 엿볼 수 있다. 맥락을 파악하기 어려운 두 이미지의 병렬이 눈에 띄는 (심지어 제목의 의도 또한 불분명한) 작품 ‘<3’에서는 작가의 본능적 미감 또한 탐구할 수 있다. 이처럼 이번 전시는 신단비의 작가적 캐릭터를 파악하는데 부족함이 없어 보인다. 하지만 무엇보다 신단비를 주목하게 만드는 것은 여기에 미처 담지 못한 색다른 매력들이 열거하기 어려울 정도로 다채롭다는 지점일 것이다. 그리고 그녀의 작업의 본질에는 자기 자신과 주변을 누구보다 세심하게 관찰하고 살피려는 ‘사랑’이라 불리는 마음이 있다는 점을 마지막으로 강조하고 싶다. 

 

 

The first solo exhibition of the writer Shin Dan-bi, who is engaged in creative activities in a wide range of areas without limiting herself to media and genres, titled '(Unconditional) Love Practice', will be held at CDA ZERO located in Seongsu, Seoul. In this exhibition, the artist will present six new works and two existing works, including installations, sculptures, videos, drawings, and photographs. Particularly noteworthy is the autobiographical art book of the same name as the exhibition title, which has been collected over the past decade, serving as a representative piece. The exhibition highlights the artist's tendency to use experiences and sensations obtained from herself and her surroundings as materials for her work. Through observing and loving herself, her family, lovers, or even herself, the exhibition aims to explore the value that can be derived from this closest subject matter, encompassing both the past and the present.

 

The exhibition begins by transporting the audience back to the artist's past. A highly traditional yet still contemporary stainless steel mailbox hangs in the air, forming a circular structure symbolizing circulation. The installation artwork, 'Sounds Heard from Outside the Door', is comprised of various familiar noises that are difficult to pinpoint their sources, shaping the viewing attitude and trajectory of the work. By bending down and listening closely to the sounds, the audience becomes synchronized with the artist's childhood experiences and motivations. Since the theme is something relatable and universal, the appreciation is not difficult. The clear and intuitive relationship between the artwork and its content enhances its expressiveness. The artist's efforts and attitude to minimize any distracting elements and to compose and direct the artwork solely around the core subject matter significantly contribute to the aesthetic quality of the work. The characteristics of 'Sounds Heard from Outside the Door,' the main artwork of this exhibition, converge with the aesthetics that permeate her overall work.

 

In works with a documentary nature that encompass both the past and the present, such as 'Candid shot' or '(Unconditional) Love Practice', one can catch a glimpse of the artist's consistent taste. In the artwork '<3,' where the parallelism of two images that are difficult to grasp the context (even the intention of the title is unclear), one can also explore the artist's instinctive sense of beauty. Thus, this exhibition seems to leave no shortage in understanding Shin Dan-bi's artistic character. However, what truly makes her stand out are the diverse charms that are difficult to enumerate here. Lastly, it is worth emphasizing that at the core of her work lies the mind of 'love,' which involves observing and scrutinizing herself and her surroundings more meticulously than anyone else.
